Moles are growths that are usually brown or black. They can appear alone or in groups anywhere on the body.

The period from early childhood through the first 30 years of a person’s life is when moles become visible. Moles also may change in size and color slowly, become raised or not change at all based on the individual. Always have moles checked if they bleed, ooze, itch, or become tender or painful.


How do Moles Form?

Moles form when cells called grow in a cluster rather than being spread throughout the body. Melanocytes make the pigment that produces natural color in our skin. Remember moles may darken under certain circumstances including exposure to the sun. Always wear adequate sunscreen protection.


How Do I Determine if a Mole Is Dangerous?

The vast majority of moles are not harmful or dangerous. However be aware of any changes in a mole’s color, height, size, or shape. Dr. Schneider can examine the mole in question and make the proper recommendation for treatment if necessary.
